The Model Development Next Generation (MDX) is a solution developed by Autodesk Consulting to assist project teams in the creation and management of project or asset information through a framework of tools and data-centric processes. MDX is enabled by configuring the Connected Data Platform with a class library from the Datum Class Library, on the Autodesk Datum platform, along with specific inputs that drive automations in Autodesk design software. Existing or derived properties are calculated from 3D models and pushed to Datum (formerly PIM360), on the Autodesk Datum platform, to meet the unique Exchange Information Requirements (EIR) of any sector or project.

From an end-user perspective, asset information is populated through plug-ins (MDX Clients) for Autodesk software—including Civil 3D, Autodesk® Revit®, and Autodesk® Plant 3D®—to support the classification and attribution of model entities according to project standards. MDX can automate the production of attribute values, such as an asset’s coordinates or start/end chainage, when associated with a Civil 3D alignment or other information derived from the model. Business rules can be configured using native entity properties in Autodesk® AutoCAD®, Civil 3D, Autodesk® Map 3D®, Plant 3D, and Revit to capture information consistently, regardless of the user.
