imagePlane

imagePlane

Win64, English

Martin Breidt
Scripted object plugin that will generate a parametric image plane for a given camera; useful for match moving, previewing set extensions, combining live footage with CG etc.

General Usage Instructions

Go to Create > Geometry > MB Objects and create a new image plane just like any other geometric object in Autodesk® 3ds Max® by click-dragging in any viewport. With the image plane selected, hit the "Pick" button to assign an existing camera to the image plane object. This will perfectly align the image plane with the camera view. After creation, the image plane can no longer be moved, rotated, scaled manually. You can adjust the distance between the image plane and the camera with the "Distance" parameter. Length and Width Segs control the number of segments in the plane. Offset and Scale allow for fine-adjustments of the placement of the image plane. All values are animatable and scriptable.

Commands

Ribbon/Toolbar Icon Command Command Description

Box mod

This toggle allows you to quickly switch the image plane into box mode for viewport display; useful if you want to quickly see through the image plane. Default = off

Scale U/V

Allows to scale the width and height of the image plane, effectively producing an overscan/underscan effect. Note: Using values other than 1.0 will result in the image plane not filling the camera view perfectly anymore Default = 1.0

Pick

Pick any perspective camera to attach the image plane to that camera

Renderable

This toggle allows you to quickly make the image plane renderable in case you want it to show up in the rendering Default = off

Length / Width Segs

Number of width and length subdivision of the plane; you might need to increase this for more accurate texture display Default = 3

Offset U/V

Allows to shift the image plane sideways. Use U parameter for shifting left/right and V parameter for shifting up/down Note: Using values other than 0.0 will result in the image plane not filling the camera view perfectly anymore Default = 0.0

Distance

Distance (in world units) between the camera and the image plane Default = 100.0

Installation/Uninstallation

Just run the installer to add/remove the tool from the main menu. You can find the new Image Plane object in the "Create" tab under Geometry > MB Objects.

The installer that ran when you downloaded this app/plug-in from Autodesk App Store will start installing the app/plug-in. OR, simply double-click the downloaded installer to install the app/plugin.

You may need to restart the Autodesk product to activate the app/plug-in.

To uninstall this plug-in, exit the Autodesk product if you are currently running it, simply rerun the installer, and select the "Uninstall" button. OR, click Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features (Windows 7/8.1/10) and uninstall as you would any other application from your system.

Additional Information

This code is released under "Quote ware" license: If you use this tool in a production environment with a group of more than two people, or have used it in the past under such conditions, then you are obliged to tell me (martin@breidt.net) about it and allow me to list that project title and your company name as a reference on my website http://scripts.breidt.net

Known Issues

This will probably not work for Vray cameras or other 3rd party camera types. As this is a scripted object plugin, you'll need to transfer the ImagePlane.ms file if you want to load a scene with image planes on another machine. Otherwise you'll get a "Missing DLL" error.
