Drawing Purge
Description
Compatible with Autodesk® AutoCAD® 2012 to 2024.
Please note that this app will not work with the AutoCAD LT version
After installing the app, if the commands are not working please read the Frequently Asked Questions page.
There are 2 commands for this plug-in
1. DWG-PURGE
To purge the Current Drawing
By entering DWG-PURGE at the command line this plug-in will delete all the DGN unreferenced LineTypes, RegApps, and Annotation Scale.
Also, a dialog box will show a list of any XRefs attached to the drawing that needs to purge.
Clicking 'Purge' will start to purge the attached XRefs.
2. DWG-PURGE-BATCH
To purge multiple drawings without opening the files.
In DWG-PURGE-BATCH you can add the drawings by following methods:
- By selecting the drawing from the 'Select drawing' button
- By selecting a folder
- Copy/Paste a folder path
- Drag and drop
From this dialog box go to the Options tab for more options.
- Purge the drawings and save them in a different location.
- Purge the drawings and add a suffix to the file name e.g:- Mydrawing_purged.dwg.
- Purge and save the drawing to another version.

All I can say after using this is WOW! Very Nice, Thank you for the contribution and such good work. This app save me a lot of steps of doing by hand. Also Ajilalv, you should add Adding Check mark to "UNBLOCK" msi for other users whom might run into issue I was originally having. Once downloaded Right click file check UNBLOCK and apply, double click to install. Easy Peazy! :)

This is my favorite app to use on the daily. If you need purging done to the next level, this is your app. I don't need to use my scripts any longer to purge and audit, this app does it and does it better. The batch purge is a game changer for cleaning up backgrounds we get from clients. Great job with this app Mr. Vijayan!

Hope future version can add support to be able to purge sheetset.
Some times it can corrupt your DWG file if your have PDF underlay. (no error message but your file size goes down to 1~2kb)

I've written dwg appid cleaners for years, and trying to purge app ids on "open" drawing will lock you up when there are a lot (50k...). The better way is top open the drawing as "dbx doc" which is something programmers do. Its not hard. The author should allow you to pick drawings not open, rather than operate on current dwg. Its 10x faster and super stable.

Oh, I totally missed that and then saw right after commenting but could not edit my reply :) I'm, going to try this plugin. I'm the author of the File Batcher which is known as PurgeIDs. Its done in .net. One thing I have found is this file cleaning is only the last step to solving the app id contamination issue. You need to first see what items are in the files/xrefs, then you know where the app ids are coming from. Then you clean them, or just the dirty ones. So some interface to show file props before the cleaning is necessary IMO. Also, I don't let my tool clean files open in current editor, when you hit the app id issue, like 50k or more, it hangs forever while dbx style cleans in seconds. thx

On the right of the screen it list compatibility with 2018 thru 2022.
In the text it lists compatibility with 2012 - 2022.
I have 2014, will it still work?

Ajilal, you have a great program here and I use it on a daily basis, I do have 1 request though, would it be possible to add a lineweight toggle (on or off) selection? I have a number of ex-.dgn files that all have their lineweights turned on and to see the files in Vault I need to toggle the lineweight off over about 1000 files.

Hi, I've downloaded this to hopefully not only save time running multiple purge and cleanup commands. But, I was hoping it would also delete redundant Data Links.
However, it doesn't seem to do this? Can it be modified to do this also?

Great tool love the batch option. Helps me save alot of time in auditing and cleaning out surplus data in mulitpile Civil 3d drawings all xrefed together.

ACAD was constantly lagging hard every time it autosaved or I did the copybase command. I had a ton of unused linetypes that I couldn't delete that seemed to be causing the problem. This little app cleared that up in an instant. Can't thank you enough!

I RUN THE PROGRAM & IT PURGES A BUNCH OF STUFF. I SAVE & CLOSE THE FILE. I REOPEN THE SAME FILE & WHEN I RUN THE PURGE PROGRAM AGAIN, EVERY SINGLE ITEM IT PREVIOUSLY PURGED IS BACK. I MUST BE MISSING SOMETHING. MAYBE IT SHOULD BE CALLED "PURGE AGAIN"

This addon works great, just one question I have is, does it only work with base autocad or will it work with different versions (ie, plant 3D, MEP, electrical, etc.)

It works well. It reduced more than half of the file size. But in Autocad 2021, it doesn't give the best result.

YOU SAVE MY DAY!! I ALREADY WASTE MY DAY SEARCHING TO HOW TO DELETE THESE LINETYPES THAT MAKES MY ACAD FILES SO BIG EVENTHOUGH ITS JUST A SIMPLE DRAWINGS INSIDE.

Drawing purge is a great and seamless add-on. It's quick, simple and easy to understand. For the most part it does the job great. However, I am having issues with purging plot styles, configurations, some shape files and standards that aren't going away when I open a batch of files in a Reference Manager. Not sure what the solution or problem is there.. ?

dear Ajilal, I am working with AutoCAD LT vers. 2020 on a 2D file in which drawings of machinery/equipments from multiple external suppliers have been inserted.
Once the blocks were removed, the file exploded at 360 Mb and no longer allows me to copy and export objects to another file. The program starts copying the selected object works for many minutes and then stops so I have to force the closure in order to exit. I have seen that Drawing-purge could solve the problem but unfortunately it is not compatible with AutoCAD LT. Is there an analogous LT compatible plug-in package that can solve my problem? Many thanks in advance for your help.
Stefano, Thanks for the review !! If you doubt whether your drawing contains DGN data which causes the increased file size, then try the steps mentioned in the link under this section >>AutoCAD LT and the DGN Hotfix << [shorturl.at/awLR9]. But please note that if the drawing has exploded blocks or xrefs, AutoCAD purge or Drawing Purge plug-in will not able to purge the entities as it is in use with the drawing.

Very nice tool, have been using for a long time. However I am getting a new error recently in the Status field of the progress window: "Error: INDEXCTL must be Zero". About 20% of my files are skipped due to this error. Any ideas?
This error is due to the restriction in the code to ignore the drawings with INDEXCTL system variable value other than Zero(0). When I was testing the app, I have noticed that if INDEXCTL is not zero, then sometimes the batch process crashed/failed. I have added an option to ignore this error in the new version of the app (version 8.2.0).Please install the latest version and on the 'About' page, there is an option turn off this error checking.
Thank you SO MUCH! I was struggling with the file size increase after I copy pasted from another consultant's file. Autodesk's hotfix solution wasn't working and this worked like a charm. Went from 25 to 1.6MB within minutes. Thanks so much. So glad I found this.

Can you add an option which change xref from "attach" to "overlay"?

The app is great and efficient but it doesn't respect settings/preferences. Even when you change the preferences in the xml files, it returns to default settings.
The program with each version is becoming more interesting. I ask the developer not to leave her.
when I use purge batch it hangs up I cant open the purge batch box. in my command show loading mep.purge batch opens to another window, problem is I cannot switch to that window.
Sound exactly like my problem, described below... one year ago... Unfortunately still haven found a solution and the problem continues after uninstall of version 7 and install version 8 of Drawing Purge.
We have one user that is experiencing this too. Thanks @Ilya Bobrov, your suggestion to right-click & Maximize did the trick! Thanks for sharing! :)
This issue seems to be related with Windows 10 Pro x64. Unfortunately I don't have any solution for this issue now. I will try and update here.

Press "ALT TAB" and switch to the program (you wont see it) Press "ALT SPACE" (you wont see anything) Press "R" (You wont see anything) Press "ALT SPACE" again, followed by "M" Press the ARROW keys to initiate the movement. Now use your mouse to move the window into place. Works with any window off the AutoCAD screen
Thank you so much! This plugin is superb. My empty template file where I save all my styles had been ballooning over the years to over 5mb. Now it's down to under 2mb and a whole lot of un-purgable layers and junk have disappeared.
Dear Ajin First of all thank you so much for this program we are having serious problems with the dgn linetypes. Our drawings are full with linetypes e.g. XREF_00$0$_19_A_B…_R00$0${ Tapered Dash } we can eliminate them with dxf and audit or using purge in autocad 2015 I was really happy to find batch purge because we are having a couple of hundred of those files which are out of control, so far batch purge is reducing the file size but not eliminating thoese linetypes is there anything we are doing wrong? Would really appreciate some help about that. lg alex
Alex,Thanks for sharing the drawings by email for testing.As I mentioned in the email, the files that you have shared is purging as expected in my system. I am not able to figure out why its not working on your system. I would suggest you to try these files in 2016 or later version.
i was working with one file size of 50MB, which is not having so many objects in it. but whenever I tried to save or copy objects to other drawings, autocad get hangs. it takes lot of time. after I run this "DWG-PURGE", the file size reduced to 2MB now it is not taking time. thank you Ajilal Vijayan

There is one or two files during batch purging that are corrupted during the process (civil3d 2016). The files are even locked so you can't even delete the file without involving server admin. If this issue is fixed would easily be a 5 star!!

Kent, I have added an option to backup the files before purging in the latest version [version 8.0]. As this error is happening randomly I am still looking to resolve this issue.

Eu utilizava a versão 6.3 e o usar o "purge-Batch" funcionava porém não explodia os blocos que estavam em uso no desenho atual, porém com essa nova versão v7.0 o aplicativo explode o bloco em uso. isto não pode acontecer, pois o aplicativo "Drawing Purge" nao pode interferir no desenho atual e também nao pode mudar as características do desenho corrente. por este motivo tive que voltar para a versão 6.3 para continuar usando em perfeitas condições. Prezado Sr. Ajila Vijayan, o que aconteceu é que, ao utilizar o "dwg-purge" ou "dwg-purge-batch" em um determinado desenho, no meu entendimento, estava explodindo o "bloco corrente", porém, o que estava acontecendo e que o bloco em questão não era um bloco, era um desenho agrupado "group", e por padrão o seu programa "Drawing Purge" desfaz todo o conjunto de desenho que esta em "group" e transforma-o em desenho simples. Então, o que eu fiz, entrei nas configurações do seu programa, e desmarquei a opção "Empty Group", com isso consegui aplicar o comando "dwg-purge / dwg-purge-batch" sem afetar o desenho corrente, ou seja, sem afetar a estrutura do desenho que eu estava trabalhando. Muito obrigado pela sua resposta, e dou 5 ESTRELAS para seu programa. Me desculpe pelo embaraço. voltarei para a versão atual. :D
Initial running of Dwg purge batch works perfectly!! but when i close my drawing then re-run again dwg purge Batch i got error (Exception in aecarch.dbx ARX Command) and cannot execute that command. how to fixs this? im using Drawing Purge v 7.0.0.0 on autocad 2013 & 2016 same problem
Had a problem with an export from a Plant3D model. Was able to audit and purge, but wasn't able to save the drawing. This addin worked like a charm auditing, purging and saving the drawing. Saved me a ton of work!

I just have tried v6.3.0.0 on ACAD 2017x64 in a project folder of 94 Files. Total folders size has been reducted from 187mb to 76.5mb without any look strange on the drawings on the first impression and with most of the used drawings been purged frequently. Seems promising, so keep up the good work!
Update Fixed: Houston we have a problem. Suddenly on day the DWG-PURGE-BATCH plugin decided to stop showing up it self anymore! I Have uninstalled an re-installed AjilalVijayanDrawingPurge700.msi again -still not working, took the hard decision to reset the AutoCAD 2018 interface -still not working, i m really not shure if Uninstalling AutoCAD will work out. DWG-PURGE command works perfectly as it should but when i type the DWG-PURGE-BACH command it loads it self and displays the taskbar icon next to AutoCAD, but the main window is not visible and the only think i can do its press escape to continue working. Please HELP! - Fixed

try to audit your file once after purge your file, type command "audit" to fix the error, then save your file. it might work
At first I was having issues with this when it would hang up on 1 drawing in a group which was really frustrating. We use 2017 ACADE. After trouble shooting with Ajilal Vijayan over a period of time, the newer version works really well and saved me a large amount of time.
When we ran a Batch Purge with this App on a drawing directory in AutoCAD 2013 and AutoCAD 2016 using the Select Folder option in Drawing Purge version 6.1.0.0 all of our Block Attributes done in Mtext were shifted randomly out of place and our title blocks looked awful. In AutoCAD 2017 it appears the Mtext block attributes stay in place.

Add on is very helpful. But quick question, on your previous 2015 add on, it had the flatten command, which was awesome- removed all the bold text and what not while purging the drawing. In this 2017 add on, it doesn't work anymore- any chance it can be added back on for 2017?
Dear kaye, thanks for the review. In the new version I removed 'Empty texts' and 'Zero length geometry' options as these two options sometimes caused the app to fail while purging. If you are mentioning these options, I will try to add it back in the next version.

I just selected folder which had about 350 drawings with varying size the initial size of folder was about 5.69 GB and now its just 5 GB total time required was about 1.5 hours but it really saved my this time as the process was automated, great tool Keep it up, Best wishes for your future projects, Thank you !!

I have both AutoCAD 2016 and 2017 installed on my computer. This work great for the 2016 version but not 2017. In AutoCAD 2017, both commands are unknown. Is it still not supporting AutoCAD 2017?

While I love the program and what it is capable of, there are still serious bugs and stability issues that need to be worked out that prevent me from adopting it to use full time: 1) Sometimes DWG-PURGE-BATCH will hang on a single file (stuck at Saving...) indefinitely. When attempting to restart the purge, the file originally being saved with be corrupted with a 0kb dummy file that would be marked Read Only. This is extremely dangerous - it seems to happen to random files, including original client CAD drawings that are sensitive and cannot be replaced. Drawing Purge does not create a failsafe or temporary backup in the event of a failed purge, and it is a pretty big oversight. I would not use a program that has a chance to corrupt the original drawings without warning. 2) I have gotten "err00: The calling thread must be STA, because many UI components require this." error multiple times. It seems to be a .NET framework problem, and this error also leads to file corruption similar to 1). 3) When closing AutoCAD after using Drawing Purge, a "FATAL ERROR: Unhandled Access Violation Reading 0x0037 Exception at e9c24084h" occurs after every time of using Drawing Purge.

Hi Krishnan, You have mentioned that 'DGNPURGE is an unknown command in 2017'. Please note that the two commands that are available with this app is Dwg-Purge and Dwg-Purge-Batch. Can you please try to run any of these commands ? Please let me know if the problem still exists.

This app has saved me a load of frustration. My Company use Acad14 save in Acad13 (and below) format, have Acad15 (but cant use it because of our clients) so I have to use it in MEP where it works well. It is worth mentioning that a normal Purge after using DGN Purge will clear the errant linetypes. Saves massive amounts of File Space. I just wish I could stop others in my company from being lazy and copying previous drawings as templates.

Hi, I would like to suggest you to try this app on some test drawings and check whether the app has deleted any things which you required. You can enable/disable what items you need to purge in the Options tab of Batch command.

Hi Celia, From 2015 Version, standard AutoCAD Purge command has the ability to purge DGN data.So to purge the DGN data, you don't need this app. But the Batch purge command will be helpful if you have multiple files to clean.

Dear Ajilal, I am using Autocad 2016 Student Version, but the app seems not to be working properly with the "items you cannot purge". Previous version cleaned perfectly, but now, blocks remain. I paste and udpate one block, but the block remains as it was in the drawing, not with the new one.

It seems that once you delete the nested block, the app needs to run 2-3 times to erase all the unused blocks. I will add a loop in the next version to fix this. Thanks for pointing this out.

The Batch processing has options which items to purge, but the DWG-PURGE command doesn't ask any question, doesn't have any options and purges everything. But I strongly need to keep my layers created manually, I don't want to re-create them again. This requirement can relate to other elements, that should not be purged. Could you please add options to the command? Or create another command DWG-PURGE-OPT.
Hi Evgeny, Thanks for the review.The options(which items needs to purge) you set in Batch purge applies to both Purge and Batch purge commands. In other words Dwg-Purge will only purge the items that you have selected in the Batch processing options.So at this stage, you have to untick the layer or other items that you don't want to purge and then run Dwg-Purge command.In the next version I will try to add the options in Dwg-Purge also. I used the batch purge to try and recover corrupted .dwg files, they can not be opened and the recover command does not work on them either. Since the files can not be opened I wanted to try this app to purge the files without opening them. But after clicking the Purge button, the batch purge window shows a BadDwgHeader in the Status column and nothing else happens. Any idea what this means and how to correct the problem with the drawing files?

I downloaded your software to deal with our DGN issues. We are using AutoCAD Architecture 2012, is this software compatible with this version? Hi Goel, The latest version of this app is now available. Your two suggestions are now added to the this version (5.0). Instead of right click on the name to open the explorer, you can double click on the file name to open the explorer and CSV export option is in the right click menu.

VERY impressed. I use Civil 3D, and it seemed that no matter how well we managed the data of our projects, or how small the file, the drawings would be slow to open, edit, regen, plot, save, etc. Once I started using this app - even if there were no DGN elements present - it sped up my drawings and increased the data processing exponentially!

Thanks for the review Jignesh. In case you did not noticed, there is a dialogue box, where you can select/unselect what should purge in both DWG-PURGE and DWG-PURGE-BATCH command. After entering DWG-PURGE-BATCH command click on 'Items to purge' and select/unselect the items to purge.

Ajilal, This app has helped me in so many situations. It purges what I want it to purge in such a simple manner. I understand that purging DGN (orphaned) data is built in to 2015, but the combination of items purged would still be helpful if this app was made to work with 2015. Thank you for putting this app together and sharing it with everyone. By the amount of high ratings from other users and their responses it is evident that it would be popular for future releases. I had several files we received from a consultant that were loaded with linetypes that could not be purged by AutoCAD. I installed this plug in and it reduced 19MB files to less than 1MB! Awesome! thanks so much.

This fixed a problem that was really bothering me. The DGN Hotfix for AutoCAD 2012 pointed out that I had all these unreferenced linetypes, but it wouldn't delete them. This did. :)
All the 4MB file sizes are mow just 100-200 KB. Kalakitinga..

Clean, simple, and very effective at clearing out a bunch of extra junk the standard purge won't grab. We had hundreds of linetypes that we couldn't clean but this app got em all first pass! Definitely worth downloading!

purged not everything in the drwaing. There were stil some blocks present which i removed with the standard purge
Yes, the program will only remove the link with the objects. Once the link/association is removed, that objects will be available for standard Autocad purge. So you need to enter standard purge at the end of this routine to remove the referenced blocks.
Hi, Now with the latest version, you do not need to run the standard purge after this commad. As the latest version will purge the blocks and other unused styles.

can you please explain, is it possible to purge dxf files also or it can only purge dwg files.
Does just what it says. Purges bloated drawings of annoying DGN linetypes and Reg Apps. Great additional Batch Processor too.
