Layer to Drawing

Layer to Drawing

Win32 and 64, English

SmatCad
Save time and eliminate mistakes by generating drawings from layers in the current open drawing to further edit and modify.

General Usage Instructions

The plugin can be used by either running the "LAYERTODWG" command or by clicking on the plug-in icon located in the "Add-ins" tab.

Once the command is run/icon is clicked, a window will appear with the layers from the current drawing listed. Each layer has a corresponding drawing name for the to-be newly produced drawing file. Clicking on a layer name in the list will allow you to rename the drawing name to be produced using the editor box located at the bottom left of the window. Furthermore, in the event you would only like to generate a sub-set of all found layers, you can check and uncheck the desired layers. For quick checking/unchecking of all layers, you can use the respective buttons located on the bottom right of the window. Drawings names cannot have certain characters which the Windows file-system prohibits such as \/:*?"<>| .

All you have to do is check/uncheck the layers you would like to be produced, and rename any drawing names as you like. However, before you can generate the drawings you must select a folder where the newly generated drawings will be saved. It is recommended to use a folder with no drawings named exactly like any of the to-be generated drawings. These newly generated drawings may overwrite drawings with the exact same name.

Once you have selected the layers which you want to produce as drawings, or renamed any of the drawing names and chosen the output folder, you can then hit generate. You will then get a message informing you the number of drawings generated. In the event the plugin encountered an error, it will inform the user of the number of drawings skipped. Any skipped layers will be highlighted in red on the list. You can also refer to the Autodesk® AutoCAD® editor line to see the detailed error message (you can also refer to Known Issues for this plugin).

The newly generated drawings will have a layer with the exact same name as in the original drawing. On this layer you should find all drawings and entities that existed on the layer in the original drawing. Settings such as line width among others will be present in the new drawing to ensure you are working with an exact replica of the original layer.

Additional Information

Known Issues

  • "Error: eFilerError" - This means you are trying to generate a drawing with a drawing name that is exactly like an already open drawing with the same file path. Close all other drawings to ensure there are no such conflicts.
  • "X drawings were skipped. They may be open and cannot be overwritten at that time." - This is the same as the above "eFilerError"
