Structural Member

Structural Member

Win64, English

TracianCAD
Insert a standard structural member from a library by selecting sketch lines, curves or model edges. IMPORTANT: BEFORE YOU UPDATE THE APPLICATION, BACK UP ALL LIBRARY FILES THAT YOU HAVE EDITED.

General Usage Instructions

The add-in tools appear in the CREATE panel of the MODEL (Solid) workspace in Autodesk® Fusion®.

1. Structural Member Settings (NEW)

Configure global or document-specific preferences before creating members.

  • Naming Patterns: Define how bodies, components, part numbers, and descriptions are named automatically using tokens like {Prefix}, {Family}, {Size1}, and {Length}.
  • Standards & Units: Set your default Standard (e.g., DIN, ANSI) and Measurement System (Metric/Imperial).
  • Visibility: Hide standards you don't use to declutter the main command dropdowns.
  • Save Global: Check this to save these settings as the default for all new designs. If unchecked, settings apply only to the current document.

2. Structural Member Command

Create structural members based on sketch geometry.

  1. Select Geometry: Select sketch lines, curves, or model edges.
  2. Geometry Configuration:
    • Standard/Family/Size: Select the desired profile.
    • Orientation: Choose an alignment point (e.g., Top-Left, Center, Bottom-Right).
    • Rotation: Rotate the profile (e.g., 90°, 45°).
    • Offsets: Apply X/Y offsets from the sketch line.
  3. Execution:
    • Part Mode: Creates new Bodies in the Root component.
    • Assembly Mode: Creates a new Component for each member if modelling tools are enabled.
    • Hybrid Mode: Creates a new Component for each member.
    • Naming: Names are automatically generated based on your Settings patterns.
    • History: The command remembers your last used Standard/Size for the next run within the same document.

3. Notch Command

Cut members to fit against others.

  1. Select a Tool Member (the body that will do the cutting).
  2. Select Target Members (the bodies to be notched).
  3. Result: The command performs a robust cut (removing material intersecting with the tool).
    • Note: This command now uses an advanced algorithm to remove scrap bodies safely without breaking timeline history.

4. Miter Command

Select two intersecting members to create a 45° miter joint between them.

5. Trim/Extend to Face

  1. Select a target Face or Plane.
  2. Select the members to trim or extend to that face.

6. Export Cutting List

Generates an Excel file on your desktop listing all structural members in the design, stacked by type and length.

  • Note: Patterns are counted; Mirrored components for part mode are not counted.

7. Add Custom Shape

  1. Select sketch entities representing the profile (Limit: ~200 entities recommended).
  2. Define sizes and thickness.
  3. Save. The shape becomes available in the "Customshape" standard library.

Customizing Libraries

You can add your own standard sizes or entirely new families by editing the Excel files included with the add-in.

Location:

  • Windows:%APPDATA%\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\StructuralMember.bundle\Contents\resources
  • Mac OS:~/Library/Application Support/Autodesk/ApplicationPlugins/StructuralMember.bundle/Contents/resources

How to Edit?

  1. Open the Excel file for a standard (e.g., GB_EN.xlsx).
  2. Add/Remove rows following the existing pattern.
  3. Save the file.
  4. Restart the command (the library reloads automatically if timestamps change).

How to Add a New Standard:

  1. Copy an existing Excel file and rename it (e.g., MyStandard.xlsx).
  2. Copy the corresponding folder (containing icons) and rename it to match (e.g., MyStandard).
  3. Replace the icons inside the folder with your own 16x16 pixel PNGs if desired.

Commands

Installation/Uninstallation

Install:

  1. Download the installer from the Autodesk App Store.
  2. Run the installer (.msi for Windows, .pkg for Mac) and follow the prompts.

Uninstall:

  1. Close Fusion.
  2. Windows: Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, find "Structural Member", and click Uninstall.
  3. Mac: Navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Autodesk/ApplicationPlugins/ and delete StructuralMember.bundle.

Additional Information

  • Parametric Only: This add-in requires "Capture Design History" to be enabled.
  • Supported Standards: GB-EN, DIN-EN, EN, ANSI-AISC, AUS, and Custom.
  • Settings Storage: Global settings are now saved in your user data folder (%APPDATA% on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support on Mac) to prevent permission errors.

Version History

Version Number Version Description

2.0.3

• Enhanced Length Calculation: The Length Update feature now automatically detects and reports the longest overall dimension of the structural member (true bounding length) rather than just the central sketch axis. This ensures perfectly accurate material lengths for cutlists, even on heavily mitered or angled parts. • Miter Tool Enhancement: Streamlined and improved the Miter command UI for a smoother, more intuitive user experience. • Orientation UI improved • General Improvements: Various minor bug fixes and under-the-hood stability improvements.
