Often, terrain information is stored as grayscale bitmaps. This routine allows displacement mapping based on brightness values to produce a NURBS surface.
At times, the required surface proves difficult to achieve with standard modeling techniques. This routine allows a modified workflow where 2D raster image tool sets can be imployed to achieve the desired result. For example, a PhotoShop creation of white and black circle on a gray background can be blurred to act as a displacement information for an "EggCrate" surface.
The routine also allows mapping to non planar surfaces. Several referenced displacements can be layered to produce extremely complex surface forms.
The surface returned by the routine is compatible with SLICE-SURFACE option while modifying 3D Solids.
