Description

The threadModeler tool has been developed to allow  Autodesk® Inventor®  users to generate a realistic modeled equivalent thread based on an existing Inventor thread feature. Users are able to select an existing thread feature in the model, which the threadModeler then converts to a realistic 3D modeled thread based on the underlying thread feature properties.

Modeled threads are accurately generated saving a lot of time and effort for the user when compared with a manual approach, bringing a higher degree of realism to your models.

    Very useful tool. Adds to the wow factor when showing off your work and for rendering. Works great for 3D printing. To get the chamfer, you need to edit the sketch of the second revolution. Remove the corner where you want the chamfer to be. Great add-on!

    Download: was simple. Installation into IV2017: was easy. Be sure to enable Auto-load and disable blocking! First use: is intuitively easy. Limitations from my p.o.v.: 1. Do use where applicable: only when thread gear display is needed. 2. It´s a makro, not an Inventor Feature => no thread info on drawing with the (dynamic) thread note command, and no subsequent change of thread Features.     Great tool looks good and works well only really used to create standard metric threads so far with good results did encounter a problem with chamfering the bolt edge though to finish did not work to well with the leading edge of the thread when mating up to hole also could not lose the opening dialogue box after using a glitch that I had a bit annoying having that on the screen all the time. That said it was impressive in showing a proper cut thread although the file size increases dramatically so it would not be good for a large assembly model with lots of bolts in it.

    If you edit the sketch of the second revolution, chamfer the corner where you want it to be. finish sketch and it should work. Since the sketch is not constrained, fixing a couple of the lines will keep you from accidentally moving one and jacking stuff up.

    Has anyone been able to make NPT tapered threads using the thread Modeler? The changelog for the app shows NPT support, but no NPT template exists. Is one of the other templates okay to use?

    Yes, it will model NPT tapered threads. First of all, make sure that your part is drawn with the taper and correct dimensions. Then you use the tool like normal. (Thread the part or hole with the Inventor thread feature, then use the coolOrange add-in to model the threads.)

    Was having trouble with a model that had threads manually created by a designer. Redid the model with this and the 3-D printers made it happen. Even the machinists can work with this, especially as the output file can be extremely detailed. THIS is an example of what it means to be in a world with talented people who use their skills to help one another so we're not dependent on the thousands of dollars of help from some designer or engineer who's not even doing the work and/or cheating with some application themselves. I wish coolOrange could do a whole lot more - because this makes Autodesk usable for realworld applications and design and makes it usable by even dummies like myself! I found a Youtube video on this and that's how I was turned on to it. I'm sure there are some nuances that could improve the program and I hope coolOrange does improve it because this is awesome! Don't let Autocad buy you out and make it unreasonable in cost for all of us :)

    I have been trying to find a good thread modeler for a while now, the one that was advertised on Autodesk Labs has been taken down for a while and I came across this one and was willing to give it a shot. It works great! I've used it on internal and external threads, and yes, it does take a little playing around with to get chamfers where you want them, but I've found that just leaving them out sometimes allows the modeler to create a nice finish on its own too. Also, it does leave the threads pretty tight, but that's not hard to adjust and it's because, like most Inventor features, they are hard locked onto the numbers. Anyone machining a part will understand there's a tolerance to be allowed for and can compensate. One other note, the Combine tool will fix the "2 solid body" issue I've seen some others bring up. It is a very efficient finishing operation to blend the modeled thread into the rest of your part as one solid body. Great Job coolOrange and Thanks a million for the Add-In!

    A few things to be aware of: • It must be an Inventor “thread” feature to work. The “hole” feature with threads generated from within the “hole” dialog box does not work. • Holes into which you will put ID threads must first be modeled at the thread major diameter. Coolorange picks up the pitch info from the Inventor thread, but assumes the diameter of the hole is a major thread diameter. If you modeled the hole at thread minor diameter (as would be normal), it will generate small threads and still think they are the correct size… • The “thread” feature must be accurate with regard to length, etc – coolorange will create the length of it's revolution and coil based on the thread feature parameters, and create a cool Helicoil looking piece of geometry that goes out into space even if there is no supporting cylindrical geometry for it. • Threads that intersect chamfers or radiuses do not work. Coolorange generated threads have flat, perpendicular ends – period. Some trimming may be required. • The coolorange geometry is not parametric with the Inventor thread feature that supplied the data. Go back and edit your thread feature, and the coolorange thread form doesn’t care. • It makes the .ipt file sizes huge. • If you want to 3D print these threads and actually have the fit together and work, you will have to "fudge" your thread fit by moving the major diameters around by .005" or so (depends on your printer) to create clearance at the pitch diameter. You may also have to manually edit the coolOrange revolution and coil to make sure the coil is longer than the revolution to get a good thread lead-in on the end. In summary, it is faster than modeling your own thread forms, but not without it's issues...

    William, thread modeler will create a revolution for the thread feature it creates. It creates that revolution as a new solid, what you need to do to perform cuts or extrusions on the new threads is go back and edit the revolution and select the join operation. It will through an error on the coil feature. Accept the error, then double click on the coil feature, and click okay on the coil feature dialogue. Everything should build successfully and you should be able to perform your cuts.

    I had no problem downloading the program and it does beautiful threads. I found if I put the chamfer in first then the picture of threads, when I convert with thread modeler the chamfer stays put. Easy to use. Hope you can update this program to include NPT threads someday

    I think it works great, although it takes chamfers out. You can put a revolve cut for the chamfer, but it is a little tricky. You have to select the threads twice if I remember correctly, the major (outside of thread) and minor (inside of thread) to get that to work. Other than that the thread looks great.

    I'm mainly using this for 3D printing, so when I found out that Inventor only uses an image for the threading, I was pretty disappointed. Luckily, this plugin saved me a ton of work in manually creating threading. It works pretty fantastic. Unfortunately, when 3D printing with PLA or ABS, the threading fit is really, really snug. This is great for manufactured parts, but isn't great for 3D printing due to the tolerances. It would be great if there was a way to add a little bit of wiggle room. If anybody knows how to do this, please let me know, otherwise it might make a great new feature.

    Chimmy, To add some wiggle room, just make your initial hole size a fraction larger before adding inventor thread feature to your hole. Then add the thread feature, then use thread modeler and it will use the larger hole size you created.

    Generates real threads great. Didn't explore many options past common metric threads. However, STL files export hollow. Couldn't force a solid fill. I'm better off manually generating threads.

    After only using threadmodeler a few weeks this is what I have experienced: I have not been able to get an internal thread on any of the models I have. On a small part (1-1/2" OAL) with 5/16-18 thread approx 1/4" long, threadmodeler applied it's thread to the entire length of the part. Most external threads I applied though turned out fine. I will still use the product, but just with the knowledge that there are some threads it can't handle.

    It looks like you generated the thread with the hole feature of Inventor. In this case no thread feature is created in the Inventor browser. But you need to select the thread in the Inventor browser. If you create the hole and then add the thread sketch with the Inventor thread command, you will be able to use this thread for the threadModeler.

    It works fantastic for male threads and as with any tool, if you think about how to use it there's no issue on male threads. Unfortunately for female threads it takes the major diameter of the modeled thread as the minor diameter of the female thread form leaving you with a drastically undersized unusable female thread for 3D printing.

    The hole that is used for the threadModeler must have the naminal diameter. So for a hole M10 the diameter must be 10 mm. If you are using the smaller bore diameter the thread will be undersized.

    This is a great tool for modeling threads on connectors. The application creates all the necessary sketches and commands for you. If you should decide that you don't want to use the threads created, it is as simple as deleting the created sketches and features. If you contact them with any questions, they will respond and give you an answer.

    Brilliant. Ideal for those occasions when you need a real thread (rendering in this case). One suggestion: Radio-button for switching between metric/imperial templates rather than browsing for template each time. Doesn't terminate internal threads correctly if the hole-end plane is a curved face, and (as mentioned in another review) it stops the thread-note from working in the drawing environment. Still deserves 5 out of 5 because it's very useful and it's free!

    I am new to creating 3D files in Inventor Pro. I spent hours trying to figure out why my "threads" wouldn't print. Was a setting wrong? Did I export it incorrectly? Was my slicer just not working? Seriously, very frustrating. A Google search revealed this gem from coolOrange and BAMM! I had threads. I don't know what is a bigger deal... the fact that Autodesk let me down (nearly to the point of LYING to me!) or these geniuses solved my problem. I haven't fully utilized this plugin, but I will. Either way I owe coolOrange a big Thank You!

    The tool is easy to use on straight thread. It didn’t work well on NPT (tapered) thread. Would like it to automatically create end chamfers and add a feature to cleanly end external threads.

    works well on internal & external threads, but is there any way the thread can start 1 to 1.5 pitch before the front face. this I think would cut into the chamfer.

    Great tool but it would be nice to grap the thread out of the hole feature. For now I have to remoddel each hole by taking away the thread and add it via thread command - or did I miss something?

    If you want a quick and realistic looking thread dropped into your model for visual purposes and don't particularly care of how it is done, this is perfect. My criticisms are these: No chamfered edge at thread end(s), thread has no ability to update with changes to part and would need to be deleted and remade, and I'm not particularly fond of the method by which it's created. No chamfer at end(s): I'm not really sure why this wouldn't be included save for maybe telling inventor how to differentiate between a thread that terminates at the end of a shaft and, for example, one that ends half way along the shaft of a bolt. However, finding a way to do that would help tremendously. Thread doesn't update: I haven't the slightest clue how difficult this might be. I would wonder if maybe the code could create unique parameter names then use those parameters to drive the features and finally, link said parameters to thread specification. Again, I don't know how difficult this is and may not be reasonable. But I do know that the sketches used to create the thread (at least where I saw) were not constrained or dimensioned. The numbers, as far as I can tell, are simple pulled and the geometry created in the code rather than dimensions being applied. Thread modeling preferences: This is probably more to do with my personal opinion, but it seems unnecessary to me that a portion of the shaft be cut away, a new solid be revolved in it's place, and a coil-cut remove material from the new solid to create the thread. I'm sure there may be reasons this approach was the one used but I don't really understand. The typical modeled shaft (unless I'm mistaken) matches the ID or OD giving you the maximum amount of material. Wouldn't it be easier to have coil-cut simply remove the extra material? Overall, great tool for visual purposes. May be asking a bit much for the thread/hole tool to recognize it. This isn't the "thread" feature as inventor sees it and since the thread/hole tool in drawings is already made, I would image coolOrange would need to make a brand new tool for the drawing that reads their threadmodeler tool. Sorry for the novel. Just being thorough. Awesome work.

    Works very well for Vee threads on short components. Have not tried Trapizoidal or Acme thread forms. Models I use it for are st stl fittings and thread form is short so I does not add too much to the file size. I did test a 180mm long thread and my graphics card was struggling.

    So I downloaded this app so I could use it to created copied versions of our working files that would show threads for our product shots. Unfortunately, while the threads look okay in Inventor, (minus chamfer issues), the threads won't even show up in Showcase, which is what I use to get our images. The app needs some work! Okay, after talking with my VAR, seems you need to "combine" solids after you cut the threads in order to then apply chamfers, etc as well as export to 3DS or Showcase, is working now, just wish Cool Orange would have made a way to allow easy changing of a thread once the feature had been created, currently all it does is create a sketch which isn't tied to anything if you try and edit it...

    After working with our VAR, we have it working. If you want to cut chamfers or holes afterwards, you have to "combine" bodies before doing any post work or exporting to 3ds or Showcase, I also wish there was an easy way to change the thread after creation, the only way I can fine to change is to delete the features and redo it as the sketch created has no dim's and isn't tied to anything..

    Generates real threads great. Didn't explore many options past common metric threads. However, STL files export hollow. Couldn't force a solid fill. I'm better off manually generating threads.

    The thread modeler works pretty good for giving a visual of threads. It does have an issue if you have a lead in chamfer. I notice that when I try to 3D print the part with the this feature it does not completely make the threads, it prints a flat spot where the threads are not complete. I haven't figured out how to 3D print threads accurately from this feature so they are usable. But it does make it faster and easier to show cut threads. All in all a pretty good add on.

    What i have notice, when using this feature. Make sure you don't add any features before using this thread modeler. Meaning, add in your chamfers and relief cuts after you convert the thread to actual. Then the thread appears normal.

    Appears to work OK. Still has trouble displaying the thread with a chamfer in place but that not a big deal. Biggest problem is the hole / thread note doesn't see the thread feature. You have to add a leader note and enter the values manually. Having it work with the tread note would be a big plus. Running Inventor 2013 Design Suite Standard Upgrading to 2014 Pro soon.

    Yeah I agree. Not threading over the chamfer is annonying. Also struggles a bit with tapered threads, NPT especially. Otherwise a good to have app.

    Yes thread note will be good to have, don't like the manual input. Trapezium metric thread seems not to work.
