coolOrange s.r.l.

Digitally signed app

The threadModeler tool has been developed to allow  Autodesk® Inventor®  users to generate a realistic modeled equivalent thread based on an existing Inventor thread feature. Users are able to select an existing thread feature in the model, which the threadModeler then converts to a realistic 3D modeled thread based on the underlying thread feature properties.

Modeled threads are accurately generated saving a lot of time and effort for the user when compared with a manual approach, bringing a higher degree of realism to your models.

Please watch this short video for an overview of the threadModeler.

  • Great tool
Brad Headlam | August 08, 2017 Verified Download (What's this?)

Time saver if you need to fully model the thread. Only downside is creates large file size, but still great.

  • Works good, a few issues
Frank Okipnak | August 04, 2017 Verified Download (What's this?)

As everyone else is saying, great for the most part, just needs to be refined so can do more thread styles as well as holes properly. Otherwise, very handy and cool. The error I get the most is "Failed, try with a bigger pitch offset value", no matter what I try, does not work.

it works very good, especially for 3D print.Thank you!

  • Straightforward and Effective
Jonathan Bazak | June 09, 2017 Verified Download (What's this?)

Does exactly what I needed it to do: make matching 3d-printable threads on holes and surfaces with just a handful of clicks. Support for more non-standard ISO metric threads would be cool, but there are plenty here as-is. Very handy extension to have!

  • Can't be used with .idw callouts
Douglas Reiland | May 14, 2017 Verified Download (What's this?)

The downloading and aesthetics of threadModeler are fine, but, unfortunately, this application is not compatible with .idw drawings. Inventor does not recognize the threadModeler modifications to the .ipt, therefore they cannot be called out with hole/thread specifications on drawings. I submitted this to coolOrange tech support. They acknowledged that this was a problem and acted as though this was the first time anyone raised this issue with them.

Daniel Gamarra | April 30, 2017 Verified Download (What's this?)

I downloaded the plugin. The installation was successful but i can't see the app in the ribbon. Is it working in version 2018??

    Cool Orange (Publisher) | May 03, 2017

Hallo Daniel, we are currently working on the version for Inventor 2018. We are planning to release it until May 12. Best regards Markus

  • Worked perfect so far

  • Very Useful
Jordan Coquoz | April 18, 2017 Verified Download (What's this?)

I don"t normally rate things but I wanted to give this five stars because of how amazingly useful this is. Huge thanks to the developers of this tool.

  • Cool so far
Engineer Draft | April 12, 2017 Verified Download (What's this?)

Have used it once where I wanted to really expose thread on a drawing, so that immediate clarification would happen. Worked well and was happy, good in context of time saving for those one off type jobs.

  • Works well for me
Jonathan Colella | April 10, 2017 Verified Download (What's this?)

    No hassle, as advertised

  • Great app needs a few tweeks
ROGER HOOKER | March 29, 2017 Verified Download (What's this?)

it's very responsive, however it's difficult to champher and seemingly impossible to extrude through.

    Albert Eurich | June 20, 2017

When using the thread modeler you create a second volume (thread). Now turning or extruding on that element you need to click on "select volume" and then select the thread itself to add it to the process. Was also wondering in the beginning :)

  • Time Saver
Jason Wells | January 17, 2017 Verified Download (What's this?)

Very useful tool. Adds to the wow factor when showing off your work and for rendering. Works great for 3D printing. To get the chamfer, you need to edit the sketch of the second revolution. Remove the corner where you want the chamfer to be. Great add-on!

  • Excellent App
John Hackney | January 14, 2017 Verified Download (What's this?)

This application will save you tremendous time if you need fully modeled threads in your model. If you do rapid prototyping of threaded parts, it is a life saver.

  • OK
Tomas Popelka | January 12, 2017 Verified Download (What's this?)

    good tool for real thread

  • Excellent, where applicable
Ulrich Bahners | January 11, 2017 Verified Download (What's this?)

Download: was simple. Installation into IV2017: was easy. Be sure to enable Auto-load and disable blocking! First use: is intuitively easy. Limitations from my p.o.v.: 1. Do use where applicable: only when thread gear display is needed. 2. It´s a makro, not an Inventor Feature => no thread info on drawing with the (dynamic) thread note command, and no subsequent change of thread Features. My Résumé: Great tool, I am a fan, thank your very much coolOrange!

  • Great app
Kaan Demirtas | December 12, 2016 Verified Download (What's this?)

Works fine and enough for my needs. Real threads are a sometimes a fine details sometimes a necessity. Works as both for me. Thanks and keep up the good work!

  • Works well few small issues but overall pretty good
Phil Brodie | December 12, 2016 Verified Download (What's this?)

Great tool looks good and works well only really used to create standard metric threads so far with good results did encounter a problem with chamfering the bolt edge though to finish did not work to well with the leading edge of the thread when mating up to hole also could not lose the opening dialogue box after using a glitch that I had a bit annoying having that on the screen all the time. That said it was impressive in showing a proper cut thread although the file size increases dramatically so it would not be good for a large assembly model with lots of bolts in it.

    Jason Wells | January 24, 2017

If you edit the sketch of the second revolution, chamfer the corner where you want it to be. finish sketch and it should work. Since the sketch is not constrained, fixing a couple of the lines will keep you from accidentally moving one and jacking stuff up.

    Phil Brodie | January 30, 2017

    Thanks Jason

  • Nice app.
Danny Pinxten | December 05, 2016 Verified Download (What's this?)

  • Need to use for NPT thread
Michael Pierides | August 15, 2016 Verified Download (What's this?)

Has anyone been able to make NPT tapered threads using the thread Modeler? The changelog for the app shows NPT support, but no NPT template exists. Is one of the other templates okay to use?

    Dalton Blevins | September 06, 2016

Yes, it will model NPT tapered threads. First of all, make sure that your part is drawn with the taper and correct dimensions. Then you use the tool like normal. (Thread the part or hole with the Inventor thread feature, then use the coolOrange add-in to model the threads.)

  • Realworld Application works
Dan Kennedy | July 06, 2016 Verified Download (What's this?)

Was having trouble with a model that had threads manually created by a designer. Redid the model with this and the 3-D printers made it happen. Even the machinists can work with this, especially as the output file can be extremely detailed. THIS is an example of what it means to be in a world with talented people who use their skills to help one another so we're not dependent on the thousands of dollars of help from some designer or engineer who's not even doing the work and/or cheating with some application themselves. I wish coolOrange could do a whole lot more - because this makes Autodesk usable for realworld applications and design and makes it usable by even dummies like myself! I found a Youtube video on this and that's how I was turned on to it. I'm sure there are some nuances that could improve the program and I hope coolOrange does improve it because this is awesome! Don't let Autocad buy you out and make it unreasonable in cost for all of us :)

  • Works great, except when you want to close it
Quirijn Verbij | May 27, 2016 Verified Download (What's this?)

The thread modeler works great, but when you want to cancel your action then there comes an error, there is no other way to close the program, only closes when you exit Inventor

  • BFS & BSP
Paul Mason | May 18, 2016 Verified Download (What's this?)

I work a lot with some very old machines and steam Loco, mainly in museums, however all are in full running/working order. My question is will we imperial, inch, sized British Standard Fine and British Standard Pipe an British Allied, thread modelling. It would make my job a lot easier

William Woehlke | April 27, 2016 Verified Download (What's this?)

I have been trying to find a good thread modeler for a while now, the one that was advertised on Autodesk Labs has been taken down for a while and I came across this one and was willing to give it a shot. It works great! I've used it on internal and external threads, and yes, it does take a little playing around with to get chamfers where you want them, but I've found that just leaving them out sometimes allows the modeler to create a nice finish on its own too. Also, it does leave the threads pretty tight, but that's not hard to adjust and it's because, like most Inventor features, they are hard locked onto the numbers. Anyone machining a part will understand there's a tolerance to be allowed for and can compensate. One other note, the Combine tool will fix the "2 solid body" issue I've seen some others bring up. It is a very efficient finishing operation to blend the modeled thread into the rest of your part as one solid body. Great Job coolOrange and Thanks a million for the Add-In!

  • Works but not on holes
Fredrik Hansson | April 27, 2016 Verified Download (What's this?)

It works but not on holes created with hole wizard. This is something Autodesk need to implement in the thread-feature instead.

Timothy Moore | March 29, 2016 Verified Download (What's this?)

FIRST CLASS such an easy way to achieve proper threads, allowing thread faces to be picked to produce an animated joint easily. Thank you Orange. Tim

  • Works OK, but...
mike lake | March 23, 2016 Verified Download (What's this?)

A few things to be aware of: • It must be an Inventor “thread” feature to work. The “hole” feature with threads generated from within the “hole” dialog box does not work. • Holes into which you will put ID threads must first be modeled at the thread major diameter. Coolorange picks up the pitch info from the Inventor thread, but assumes the diameter of the hole is a major thread diameter. If you modeled the hole at thread minor diameter (as would be normal), it will generate small threads and still think they are the correct size… • The “thread” feature must be accurate with regard to length, etc – coolorange will create the length of it's revolution and coil based on the thread feature parameters, and create a cool Helicoil looking piece of geometry that goes out into space even if there is no supporting cylindrical geometry for it. • Threads that intersect chamfers or radiuses do not work. Coolorange generated threads have flat, perpendicular ends – period. Some trimming may be required. • The coolorange geometry is not parametric with the Inventor thread feature that supplied the data. Go back and edit your thread feature, and the coolorange thread form doesn’t care. • It makes the .ipt file sizes huge. • If you want to 3D print these threads and actually have the fit together and work, you will have to "fudge" your thread fit by moving the major diameters around by .005" or so (depends on your printer) to create clearance at the pitch diameter. You may also have to manually edit the coolOrange revolution and coil to make sure the coil is longer than the revolution to get a good thread lead-in on the end. In summary, it is faster than modeling your own thread forms, but not without it's issues...

    Phil Brodie | January 30, 2017

I never had issues as long as I created the hole diameter myself and added from the thread modeling tool

  • great product
William Knox | January 21, 2016 Verified Download (What's this?)

Works great when adding threads to our custom parts. However, when I attempt to add a Key (whether before of after) it will not extrude cut through the threads. Any suggestions?

    Tony Van Avermaete | April 21, 2016

William, thread modeler will create a revolution for the thread feature it creates. It creates that revolution as a new solid, what you need to do to perform cuts or extrusions on the new threads is go back and edit the revolution and select the join operation. It will through an error on the coil feature. Accept the error, then double click on the coil feature, and click okay on the coil feature dialogue. Everything should build successfully and you should be able to perform your cuts.

  • Works Great 2016
Douglas Cook | December 07, 2015 Verified Download (What's this?)

I think it works great, although it takes chamfers out. You can put a revolve cut for the chamfer, but it is a little tricky. You have to select the threads twice if I remember correctly, the major (outside of thread) and minor (inside of thread) to get that to work. Other than that the thread looks great.

Chimmy Chang | November 15, 2015 Verified Download (What's this?)

I'm mainly using this for 3D printing, so when I found out that Inventor only uses an image for the threading, I was pretty disappointed. Luckily, this plugin saved me a ton of work in manually creating threading. It works pretty fantastic. Unfortunately, when 3D printing with PLA or ABS, the threading fit is really, really snug. This is great for manufactured parts, but isn't great for 3D printing due to the tolerances. It would be great if there was a way to add a little bit of wiggle room. If anybody knows how to do this, please let me know, otherwise it might make a great new feature.

    Tjzerr Tjzerr | January 09, 2016

    Tony Van Avermaete | April 21, 2016

Chimmy, To add some wiggle room, just make your initial hole size a fraction larger before adding inventor thread feature to your hole. Then add the thread feature, then use thread modeler and it will use the larger hole size you created.
