Openings Builder
Win64, EnglishGeneral Usage Instructions
How Openings Builder Fits into Your Workflow
MEP Design (Linked Models):
MEP engineers model their pipes, ducts, and cable trays in their own discipline-specific Revit models.
Architectural / Structural Modelling:
Architects and structural engineers continue developing their models (walls, floors, beams, slabs) without placing openings manually.
Coordination Phase:
- The BIM coordinator or structural team links the MEP model into the host (structural or architectural) model.
- Without Openings Builder, openings would need to be created manually after visual clash detection.
Using Openings Builder (Automated Phase):
- Open the host structural model (walls and floors).
- Link in the MEP model (if not already linked).
- Launch the Openings Builder add-in.
- Select your desired MEP elements (or process all).
- Specify any optional offset (to enlarge openings).
- Choose the structural link to target (if applicable).
- Click Generate Openings.
What Happens Next:
- Openings Builder scans the model, detects penetrations (ducts, pipes, trays) in linked or host MEP models.
- Automatically places void openings in walls and floors exactly where MEP elements pass through.
- Aligns and orients openings to match sloped or angled MEP elements.
- Reports any missed elements or special cases.
Review & Document:
- Review the automatically placed openings visually or using Revit schedules.
- Adjust or override any specific opening as needed (since they’re parametric voids).
- Continue documentation, scheduling, or export.
Where Openings Builder Adds Value
Typical Workflow Without Add-in |
With Openings Builder |
Visual clash detection, manual void placement |
Automated detection and void creation |
Prone to missing elements |
Guaranteed detection of all penetrations |
Time-consuming modelling |
Done in minutes, not hours |
Inconsistent opening sizes/shapes |
Standardized, parametric openings |
In Practice:
Openings Builder fits naturally into your coordination phase, acting as the bridge between MEP design and structural detailing. It eliminates the manual burden of placing and adjusting penetrations, ensuring coordinated, constructible models faster and more accurately.
Commands
Installation/Uninstallation
The installer that ran when you downloaded this app/plug-in from Autodesk App Store will start installing the app/plug-in. OR, simply double-click the downloaded installer to install the app/plugin. You may need to restart the Autodesk product to activate the app/plug-in. OR, click Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features (Windows 10/11) and uninstall as you would any other application from your system.
Additional Information
1- Single openings are hosted on the MEP elements
2- Multi Opening families are hosted on the wall
3- void families are not hosted due to revit api limitation
Known Issues
1.For better performace, it's better to not run the addin on the entire model
2.For data entry issue, press reset data button
