3D OBJ Exporter – User Guide
1. Launching the Plugin
- Open your Revit project.
- Navigate to the Add-Ins tab on the Revit ribbon.
- Click on the OBJ Export button to launch the plugin.
2. Element Selection
Choose which elements to include in the export:
- Visible in View – export all elements visible in the active 3D view.
- Select Elements – manually choose specific elements (must belong to the active 3D view).
3. Choosing Export Options
Toggle the switches for the available export options to define what data will be exported.
4. Geometry Export (OBJ & MTL Files)
Select this option to export geometrical information of the chosen elements.
In the Geometry Export Setup window, configure:
- File Export Mode – export all elements into a single OBJ file or create one OBJ file per element.
- Export Quality – set the resolution/detail level of exported geometry.
- Export Unit – choose the unit type (meters, centimetres, inches, etc.).
- Texture – export material textures as PNG files to preserve visual fidelity.
5. Parameter Export (JSON Files)
Select this option to export a JSON file containing parameter values of the chosen elements.
In the Parameter Export Setup window:
- A single tree view (organized by category → family → parameter) is provided.
- Use filters to control the view:
- Selected – shows only the parameters chosen for export.
- Available – shows parameters not yet selected.
- Use controls to manage the list:
- Select All – selects all available parameters.
- Deselect All – clears all selections.
Once configured, the selected parameters will be included in the JSON file.
6. Running the Export
- Click the Export button.
- Choose a destination folder for the files.
- Wait for the export process to complete.
7. Accessing Exported Files
In the specified destination folder, you will find:
- OBJ files – geometry.
- MTL files – material references.
- JSON files – parameter data.
- PNG files – exported textures.
8. Using Exported Data
- Virtual Reality – import OBJ + MTL files into VR applications for immersive visualization.
- 3D Modelling Software – open OBJ files for editing and refinement.
- Data Analysis – process JSON files in analysis or data integration tools.
- Texturing – apply PNG textures to maintain material appearances.
9. Tips & Best Practices
- Optimize Your Views – configure the active 3D view to display only necessary elements.
- Check Element Selection – confirm the correct elements are chosen before exporting.
- Save Regularly – save your Revit project before export to prevent data loss.
- Leverage Exported Data – use the outputs across VR, 3D modelling, and analytics to maximize interoperability.

Installation/Uninstallation
The installer that ran when you downloaded this app/plug-in from Autodesk App Store will start installing the app/plug-in. OR, simply double-click the downloaded installer to install the app/plugin.You may need to restart the Autodesk product to activate the app/plug-in. To uninstall this plug-in, exit the Autodesk product if you are currently running it, simply rerun the installer, and select the "Uninstall" button. OR, click Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features (Windows 10/11) and uninstall as you would any other application from your system.
