Custom Material Paint Browser. Speed up all your material work. Assigning instance family face material parameter with just one click. Revealing painted faces in red while removing them and more.

General Usage Instructions

First, make sure to open the material browser from Autodesk® Revit® ,first. It will load project material temporary thumbnails somewhere in C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Temp. Then, you can open SuperPaint Browser. It will cache all those thumbnails. This process only needs to be done once for each project if file is been used recently so temporary thumbnails aren't been deleted by OS. If it still has missing thumbnails, a "Missing Thumbnail" selection will be added to the Material class dropdown box. Those materials are either edited or created by API or Dynamo. If you want to cache those missing thumbnails, you need to open the Revit material browser and check each material individually. Click on each material's appearance asset tab and wait till updating... disappear and a new thumbnail will get generated. After that, you can click on reload button of the SuperPaint Browser. It will update those material's thumbnails and save them for next time use. This add-in helps you to cache those temporary thumbnails, so you don't have to wait extra time for those thumbnails to be regenerated in each session. Please note that some material still can't be cached due to the API limit.

All four functions: Remove Paint/ Paint System/ Paint Family/ Paint Topo are dynamic loops for continued Painting. During each execution loop, you can change the material selection in the SuperPaint browser at any time, it will apply new material to the next execution. To exit the function, hit ESC on the keyboard or mouse right-click “Cancel” Menu Item.

Fix Asset Name function is for fixing the materials which have invalid characters in their asset names. The Revit material browser can't create a temporary thumbnail and leaves it blank.

The rest of the functions are quite intuitive. Please follow the demo video on YouTube to learn those features.

Currently, the Paint Family function supports the following categories:

  • All custom instance families (Except Imported CAD objects in them)
  • For System families:
  1. stair
  2. wall/ Floor/ Roof/ Ceiling
  3. Structure Foundation/ Building Pad/ Column
  4. Parts
  5. Railings (Revit versions after 2019 only)
  6. Fascia/Gutter/Roof Soffit/SlabEdge
  7. Toposolid (Revit versions after 2024 only)

#categories will be expanded based on customer requests.

#You need to have a face associated with a material parameter to be able to use the Paint family function. If no associated parameter is found with the picked face, the process will fail.

#When using the Paint Family tool, if the selected face is painted, then the paint will get removed and use the original material to find the correct material parameter to set.

# Paint Family function is based on face's material value, not by geometry. If the same family instance has several parameters with the same material value, all those parameters' values will be set the same as the new material.  Type/ Instance/ Global Parameters are all supported.

#You need to have the right to access C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Temp folder. Otherwise, the app won't cache material thumbnails for you. If you do encounter this problem, please ask Google for How to take ownership of the folder in WinXX. Make sure to check "Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object" in the Advanced setting.

# Cached thumbnail files are saved in C:\Users\YourName\Documents\SuperPaint\. You can specify how long they will be kept in the folder in settings. Default is set to 14 days.
