Automate dimensions in Autodesk® Revit® – faster, more accurate, and error-free.

General Usage Instructions

Navigate to the add-in

To use the FORMlab Dimensionator Revit Add-In:
- Open a Revit Document.
- Navigate to the FORMlab tab.
- Click the Open Panel button to toggle the Dimensionator panel. This panel can be docked anywhere in Revit or used as a floating window.
- If you do not have a valid license, a license window will pop up. If you're eligible for the free 30-day trial, the license will be automatically filled in.

Create Dimensions

Click Create Dimensions in the Dimensionator panel to enter dimension creation mode, then draw one or more detail lines directly — no pre-selection required.
Alternatively, select existing detail line(s) first and then click Create Dimensions to dimension them immediately.
Works in Floor Plan, Ceiling Plan, Elevation, and Section views.
Any element that intersects a detail line and matches the configured filter will be dimensioned.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Supercharge your workflow by binding Create Dimensions and Select References to keyboard shortcuts. Two dedicated ribbon buttons are exposed in the FORMlab tab for exactly this purpose — they are not meant to be clicked directly.
Open Revit's keyboard shortcuts manager (type KS), search for the command name, and assign any key combination you prefer. Once bound, you can run the add-in's core actions without touching the panel.

Adjust Settings

Customize the add-in's behaviour with the following settings:

Select created dimensions - Replace current selection with created dimensions.
Delete detail lines - Delete detail lines after dimensions were created.
Use line style - After creating dimensions, apply a chosen line style to the detail lines that were used. Not available when Delete detail lines is enabled.
Rearrange overlapping dimension text - Re-position dimension text after creation so that no values overlap and every dimension is clearly readable.
Minimum wall width - Walls below this threshold will not be dimensioned. Fill in 0 to disable this feature.
Combine walls within distance - Treat walls in proximity as a single element, dimensioning only the outermost sides. Walls closer than the specified distance are combined.
Include elements in linked files - Will include elements in active linked files when enabled.
System Categories - Select which system categories should be included when dimensioning.
Generic Models - A generic model will be dimensioned if its IFC export category parameter is set to one of the below selections.

Stacked Dimensions

The Combine and stack to option combines multiple selected detail lines into a single dimension, stacked toward the chosen direction (Left, Right, Top, or Bottom).
When stacking is enabled, External wall mode becomes available. This creates one or more additional dimensions that focus specifically on external walls. Columns and structural columns are always included alongside external walls in this mode, regardless of the category filter settings.

External wall mode offers three tiers, each producing a separate stacked dimension when enabled:
Bounding dimension - A dimension spanning only the two outermost references (external wall faces and column references), giving the overall building width.
External faces only - A dimension including the external faces of external walls and all column references, showing the structural grid between the outermost envelope faces.
Internal and external faces - A dimension including both internal and external faces of external walls and all column references, detailing full wall thicknesses alongside column positions.
At least one tier must remain enabled at all times. The enabled tiers stack onto each other in the chosen direction.

Verify Dimensions

Select one or more dimensions and click Select References to add all elements to your selection that the dimensions are attached to.
This allows for easy inspection/validation of the dimensions, regardless of whether they were created manually or with the add-in.
Tip: hide all unselected elements to make inspection easy and clear.

Installation/Uninstallation

- Close Revit before installing the add-in.
- Launch the dimensionator-addin_X.X.X.msi installer.
- Go through the steps in the install wizard. Note that the wizard allows you to select which Revit versions you want to install the add-in to.
- The add-in will be installed under C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Revit\Addins (Revit 2023-2026) or C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit\Addins (Revit 2027+); both require administrator privileges. The installer will prompt for this.
- After completing the install wizard, the add-in is installed. You can now (re-)open Revit.

To uninstall, launch the dimensionator-addin_X.X.X.msi installer again. Choose Remove and follow the steps.
