The COINS Auto-Section Box tool gives you tremendous speed and agility over managing three-dimensional views when analyzing model areas of particular interest. It allows you to quickly create temporary and permanent views to be used for immediate interrogation of the model or for construction document deliverables. This works by allowing you to focus on the model instead of managing views or a view’s properties.
Although Autodesk® Revit® has built-in support for creating section boxes from elements, the COINS Auto-Section Box improves on this with the following time-saving features:
- Works with elements in linked files.
- Special handling of grids, section lines, elevation markers, levels, scope boxes, dimensions, and tags.
- Option to create new views.
- Toggle the section box on and off to gain a better understanding of the selection within the context of the whole model.
- Option to arrange the original selection view and the 3d view side-by-side.
- Align section box to walls, members, or other line-based geometry.

Great tool to use
Easy to install, have been using it for years, I prefer to use it over Revit's built in 3D section tool.

In the 2019 version, it was possible to assign a shortcut key, but in the 2023 version, it is not possible to assign a shortcut key.Keyboard shortcuts are working for COINS Auto-Section Box in Revit 2023 & 2024. Just tried it myself: Options->User Interface->Keyboard Shortcuts->Customize, search for Section, assigned "QS" to "Quick AutoSection" and tested it - on 2023 & 2024. If still not working for you, I would recommend getting with Autodesk Support as shortcut assignment is controlled by the core product.
I really enjoyed this plyugin but for some reason, it no longer shows up in revit 2022 ribbon and I can not use the plugin. I've repairs, unstalled and reinstalled yet it still is not showing up. Could anyone detect what the problem could be?

Hi All, I came across the Coins add-in a few years ago, as a professional Revit user expert, I strongly believe that's the most useful Revit tool that I use every day and also recommend others to use it too.
The classic problem is the BIM management team, generally speaking, people with loads of knowledge but lack practical experience. As such our BIM manager is unable to see the significance of this add-in and can't understand why it's essential. So I had to find a way to put it on my machine without using its installation app. I did that for Revit 2020 but can't remember how. Just wondering if anyone could advise how to put on Revit 2021 by copying its files.

Thank you for the kind words Kayvan. If you can use the installer to install it on a PC (doesn't need Revit on that PC) then you can copy the files from the "C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\CoinsSectionBoxApp2016.bundle" folder to the same place on another PC.
Current plugin is worthless without keyboard shortcuts.
COINS Auto-Section Box supports Revit keyboard shortcuts and can be added through Options->User Interface->Customize Keyboard Shortcuts and then optionally filter on the Add-Ins tab. This is how the Quick Auto-Section Box is ideally designed to be used.

Thanks for the review. You can do this through Revit functionality - Revit Options->User Interface->Customize Keyboard Shortcuts, then search for AutoSection and assign a new shortcut.
Great add-in but it would be great to bring back the option to get side by side view when I make a section box. Rob

Thank you for offering a useful tool freely. I have used it for many years. It will be a great improvement if we can also make a section box by selecting an object in linked RVT.
Hello Chau - this functionality is already in the app. To select a linked element, start the command with no object selected, pick the linked file when prompted to select elements, pick Finish, and then the app will prompt you to pick elements inside the linked file. These extra steps are required due to API limitations.
The view name text box does not like when I type characters on the default name it gives me. It seems to erase the entire name when I add characters to it.
I've come to depend on this add-in in my place of work. It works great and speeds up my 3d modeling tremendously.
At home, I'm using the Revit LT versions.
Is this available for Revit LT. I've run the install and I don't see that it woirked
Revit LT does not support add-ins, therefore, unfortunately, this tool will not work in within Revit LT.
Hello, i love COINS section box but i have a problem, in a project instead of showing the whole element it just makes a cube, and not showing for example the whole column, only the centre of it, any ideas why please?

I am a big fan of using this tool, especially between multi trade coordination. However, there seems to be issues with the new revit 2020 software and autosection. I am having issues where the coordination model, linked NWD, isn't visible despite all worksets turned on and the coordination model settings are all visible. The second issue with the autosection box seems to be displaced within the actual view its self and I am having issues with cropping my view. I have tried removed from my computer and redownloading, this is not worked at all. I also want to mention my Revit model is hosted on BIM360. I had less issues when the model was hosted on my server.

Thank you for the kind words. While you are in the exe front-end (where you choose which version to install) you will find the MSI files in a sub folder of your temp folder. You can copy those out and use them directly in deployments.
Is the side by side view option going to made possible again?

Hello Osmany. That feature had to be removed from the 2019 version onwards because of how the new Revit tabbed windows work.
This is a very useful tool. You can create a scope box and then create a 3d view the exact size of the scope box as well using this tool. Then use the toggle section box and it becomes very powerfull for model review and also for model export.
Perfect tool! One suggestion: why don't you change it to be allowed in the quick bar?
Hello Jorge - thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately I do not think add-ons can be added to the quick access toolbar. However, you can assign our tool to a keyboard shortcut - nearly as good.
I love this tool and am a COINS promoter with any Revit user I encounter. Autodesk's Selection Box tool doesn't come close to the features of this add-in. With the new Grow/Shrink commands they were able to incorporate with customizable keyboard shortcuts, it will be used even more. The COINS development team is doing a great job. Keep up the great work!

This is a great tool! When I first started doing BIM, I was dragging around 2D sections everywhere to work on walls. Once I was introduced to the Auto Section, it was a game changer. I now use this tool all day, every day. Thank you for developing such a useful tool. User support response is also very quick and eager to help.
Great tool, does what it says it can do. Would be even better to have keyboard shortcuts to quickly view something and turn it off.
Hi Marco. You can apply keyboard shortcuts - under Revit Options->User Interface->Keyboard Shortcuts and filter on the "Add-Ins Tab". This works well when applied to the "Quick Auto Section Box" and "Toggle Section Box" commands.

But i have one wish. Include a toggle to create a new view or specify an existing view. If a user is not paying attention, they will change an existing view accidentally.
Simple but so effective tool
We currently have this Add-In as part of our Typical install that serves approx. 180 users. Once it was installed, users began developing it into their standard workflow immediately with fantastic and positive results.

This is by far the single greatest addon to REVT, thank you. I don't know how I survived without it. But.... it won't install on one of my machines. Install seems to install and uninstall seems to uninstall but it doesn't show up in addins. Can you suggest anything please?
A perfect example of an easy to use tool which saves a lot of time in the long run especially when you are working on large projects like myself. Jon from their helpdesk was of great assistance in helping me resolve my issue despite being on the other side of the world (Australia/ USA)

Have been looking for those kind of apps for a long time. Autodesk Exchange Apps saves me a lot of efforts. I usually tried to find Revit plugins, add ons/add ins with Google. But sometimes it takes me to some unknown forum and I downloaded some extensions with virus. Thanks to autodesk, I don't need to take risk any more.

This is nice, good and quick. :-)
It installs into the current user's AppData folder but then shows up in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall I expected it to be under HKEY_Current_User. You should be consistent and follow Microsoft standards so it works better with automated systems like computer images and unattended installers.

I use this app all the time to review for proper coordination while I am working in Revit. I especially use it while in meetings with team members and clients. Usually everyone starts asking about the app and how to install it for themselves. Great help for everyday. I also had a great experience with their support team today when I had a user error with a lost dialog box. Coins gave me a quick reply email with solutions that allowed me to continue without great difficulty. Thanks Coins....
Mad simple and very useful, I would recommend this to everyone
Installed as part of base image. However a part is in AppData\Roaming (C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\CoinsSectionBoxApp.bundle\) So it's not available to new users. With a base image every user is a new user, sort of. And I have to install it for each user on each machine.

Yes, it is available in Revit 2013, I just did not see it the first time. My team is very happy about this tool and they started using it and they feel that the tool is a time saver. Great tool. Is precise numerical (size) control and snapping (to model elements) possible? Can the section box then be applied back to plan/section/elevation views as a crop box?

This is one of the most beneficial tools that I have installed to date. Our workflow requires us to isolate and work on many highly detailed building components throughout a project. This tool works well and without issue, and has been a huge benefit to us. I have also experienced COINS tech support which is superb and timely as well. Great work!
I wish this can create a list of Autosectionbox views based on room name. (100 rooms for 100 views)
