The add-in is designed to help users identify and remove duplicated materials in an Autodesk® Revit® file.
It can be a time-consuming task for users to identify and remove duplicate materials, this Revit add-on offers users an automated way to identify and remove them.
Two or more materials are considered duplicated when they share the same name in the Revit file.
To determine if any duplicate exists, the tool scans through all the materials found in the Revit file using the Revit API. if duplicates are found, the user is notified by the add-in and given an option to remove them. The tool will not delete duplicated materials if they are used in any active components found in the Revit file.
Currently, the tool can only process materials and appearance assets, it will not process physical or thermal assets.
We are currently dealing with approximately 27,000 duplicated materials across several project files, and we decided to try this add-in as it is presented as an official Autodesk solution. It is definitely helpful to have a dedicated tool addressing this kind of issue.
One usability improvement would be to make the add-in window “Topmost.” When working in a workshared model, Revit prompts you to check out Materials, which can cause the add-in window to move into the background. This may create some confusion, as it can appear that the process has stopped.
We also noticed that when prompted to check out a workset, the add-in may not continue the process as expected. In those cases, restarting the add-in resolved the issue.
In our testing, the add-in was able to significantly reduce the number of materials. However, it did not consistently remove duplicated assets with identical names (2 were left and addin refused to delete them). We had to do additional cleanup by using the Purge function (then go back to the addin to delete the remaining 2 which did not appear in Purge dialog).
It remains unclear whether this process fully resolves the issue of thousands of duplicated materials appearing in our Revit 2025 models. We will need more time and testing to confirm its effectiveness.
