Cloud Renderer

Cloud Renderer

AMC Bridge

Cloud Renderer for Autodesk® Revit® is a technology demonstration add-in for Revit that enables physically based rendering of Revit models either on the Microsoft® Azure® or Amazon Web Services® cloud platforms or locally using LuxRender, physically based and unbiased rendering engine. 3D models created in Revit can be displayed in photo-realistic views or rendered with built-in photorealistic renderers. It is reasonably fast and produces high-quality images. Physically based rendering provides images of much higher fidelity but requires significant computational resources. For this reason, Cloud Renderer utilizes advantages of cloud resources for rendering.

Cloud Renderer uses LuxRender engine for the photo-realistic rendering. LuxRender is a free and open source software rendering system. Based on state of the art algorithms, LuxRender simulates the flow of light according to physical equations, thus producing realistic images of photographic quality. It is based on the PBRT project but differs from that program by focusing on production rendering and artistic efficiency instead of scientific purposes.

Cloud Renderer consists of two parts, Revit converter of 3D model data into a format appropriate for the LuxRender engine and a rendering cluster that can be deployed either to Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services cloud environment.

LuxRender for Cloud deployment packages can be downloaded from AMC Bridge website (link) and deployed according to the user’s guide.

Cloud Renderer for Autodesk Revit offers the following features:

  • Physically based and unbiased rendering using LuxRender 1.6 engine that produces realistic images of photographic quality;
  • Converter for Revit models to Lux scene format. It supports conversion of camera, geometry, lighting, light groups, materials and textures data;
  • Local rendering;
  • Network rendering clusters for Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services cloud platforms.

    We've been evaluating LuxRender, and easy exports from Revit seem to be the main sticking point. This seems to work great in 2014, but that doesn't help going forward.
